Bijou Karman is a talented Californian illustrator with a penchant for luxury fashion and great works of literature. Lending the subjects of her illustrations a palpably cool air and a selection of enviable outfits and reading lists (I love a Gucci girl who reads Truman Capote), her bold colour combinations and attention-to-detail perfectly balance deadpan expressions and nonchalant stances.
Based in LA and still at a young age, Bijou has already worked with prolific clients such as ELLE, Converse and The Los Angeles Times. Depicting ultra-modern and vintage-inspired scenes, her personal works communicate a love for heavily stylised cult cinema classics such as Boogie Nights, The Virgin Suicides and Ghost World.
With much-loved anti-heroines from the likes of Moonrise Kingdom and The Diary Of A Teenage also peppering her portfolio, it’s safe to say Bijou is a woman after our my own heart. Her fashion illustrations are impeccable, with it-bags, new season pieces and much talked about wallpapers adorning her characters and their surroundings in almost exact replica.
A great mix of self-directed works and collaborative, brand-led pieces, as well as zines and pins, are available in Bijou’s Etsy store, but it’s her Instagram feed I love most for a diverse look at her imaginative creations. Working with gouache ink and pencil, and inspired by folk, feminism and retro aesthetics, Bijou is an intelligent fashion illustrator in a class of her own.
