If you’ve been following YOUNG GOLD TEETH long, you might have noticed me going on about an indie publication called Intern Magazine. Intern is a brilliantly unique printed mag created by Founder and Editor-in-Chief Alec Dudson.
Inspired by youth culture and geared towards giving young people in the creative industries a leg up, Intern also runs amazing events for grads and creatives looking to hone their skills and move their disciplines forward. This year Intern is coming to Free Range at the Old Truman Brewery, and I’m super stoked to be joining Alec and the team there for their upcoming event NOW WHAT?
NOW WHAT? is a free day of talks and workshops that will take place as part of a massive annual showcase of emerging talent in the UK, on Monday 19th June from 10am – 4pm. While creative students from educational institutions across Britain take over a vast exhibition space just off Brick Lane, Intern will be offering a day of practical advice on how to kickstart a creative career.
‘Graduation can be scary’ says Alec, ‘so we’ll ensure that you’ve got some constructive and workable advice to go home with, dished out by our team and a couple of our favourite young creatives.’
NOW WHAT? will be taking place in Ely’s Yard, one of our favourite east London spots just off Hanbury Street. You’re invited to drop in for a jam-packed day, starting with an inspiring workshop on pitching, networking and submissions by Alec and closing with careers advice sessions in which you can chat directly with the speakers taking part; these are totally free but it’s worth booking as spaces are limited.
10am – A workshop by Intern Editor-in-Chief Alec Dudson on three vital elements of any creative professional’s practice: pitching ideas and communicating your concept, networking and how to submit your work to publications, competitions and other platforms.
12pm – A talk by Emily Beeson, founder of YOUNG GOLD TEETH, on personal branding and self-promotion. How to define your own personal brand, useful tools, what to watch out for and how to stay focused and positive in order to overcome setbacks along the way.
1pm – A talk by Intern Issue Three contributor and creative whirlwind Michael Lester on the pros and cons of a freelance career and why he left Ogilvy and Mather in Paris to go freelance. Michael will share the methods that have helped him to gain momentum.
2pm + 3pm – Mentorship and careers advice sessions with Founder and Editor Alec, Intern’s Photography Editor Hollie Myles, Emily and Michael. Book your spot for one-to-one advice on graphic design, illustration, personal branding, self-promotion, freelancing, photography, curation or publishing and leave with a few pearls of wisdom and perhaps a few new ideas.
Simply select the time of your careers session here and get an appointment confirmation in your email inbox. Registering for a session will also earn you an exclusive discount code for 30% off everything in Intern’s online store, that means discounted mags and merch, including the brilliant ‘F U PAY ME’ tote bag.
I can’t wait to share my experiences and advice with you all on 19th June. Join us at NOW WHAT? for a no-nonsense guide to life after university hosted by my amazing friends at Intern Magazine. Until then, follow Intern on Twitter and Instagram for brilliant articles and daily inspiration.
