Mercedes Bellido is a talented Spanish artist with a penchant for the mystical and bright. Having studied Fine Art in Cuenca, she continued to develop her distinctive style in Madrid where she gained her Masters. A painter and illustrator by trade, Mercedes is really an all-round creative with a great sense of style and a knack for interior design too.
Specialising in images of lush greenery, surreal pic skies and occult totems, Mercedes’ work is usually created using traditional mediums, such as thick paint on paper and canvas. Clashing colours, skulls, tigers and pointed fronds are daubed in block layers with simple outlines akin to traditional tattoo-style illustration.
Mercedes has collaborated with the likes of Urban Outfitters, Reebok and Sony and boasts the ability to immerse her viewers in strong yet simple narratives rooted in faraway lands. Inspired by Giorgio De Chirico and Henri Rousseau, her work is playful enough to initially draw the eye and complex enough to hold the gaze and spark the imagination.
Gearing up for her next show at Espacio Ananas in Madrid, Mercedes is a great source of inspiration, regularly sharing work in progress and snaps of her tools, studio and new works on Facebook and Instagram. Oh, and there are cute cat photos too, if you’re into that sort of thing. With spring setting in, we’ll be looking to Mercedes for our fix of colour and creativity for many months to come
