Sock Project: Portraits of Our Favourite Artists as Excellent Accessories

The endless debate of whether or not socks and sandals can ever truly be considered sartorially safe appears to have been settled thanks to a collaboration between stylist and blogger Kate Brien and photographer David Kitz. Not too long ago, we shared an image from the pair’s Art Socks series on our Instagram and were stupefied by the fervent love some of you showed the sock-sandal combinations. This project, a collection of portraits featuring fine art-inspired socks against vivid backdrops has fused a few of our favourite things; iconic paintings, jazzy sandals and colourful concrete, so naturally, we’re big fans.

Kate selected a few socks from an online emporium, unsurprisingly named Sock Drawer, that nod to the likes of Van Gough, Frida Kahlo and Picasso, pairing them with footwear and contrasting bottoms from her own collection. Shot by David, a photographer based in California, the project is not only a ringing endorsement for leading a colour-soaked life, but is also a prime example of one of the more perfect and simple unions of art and fashion. As we all know, the two aren’t always bffs.

So which pair would you go for? Picasso on your pins? Frida on your femur? We’re not sure we could pick a favourite. We are sure, however, that this is one selection of images that we’ll turn to during creative inspiration droughts for many months to come.
