Patrick Martinez

Patrick Martinez is a visual artist who hails from the United States. As a teenager of the late 80’s and early 90’s, an interest in graffiti and hip-hop culture rooted itself firmly as part of his artistic style, influencing a lot of the work he now produces.

Movies like Wild Style and Style Wars heightened an awareness of the Hip Hop movement and fuelled a gregarious path into design work for underground and mainstream record labels that catered to the Hip Hop community.

I love this series of neon signs that play on the language of hip-hop and the snappy, urban function of neons that we tend to take for granted. The comic edge to these pieces is brilliant, they read like figuratively transposed soundbites or flashes of lyric.

Patrick has created a series of work that boasts endless appeal by virtue of the implicit reflection on culture that it enables.

By honing in on the phenomenology of his surroundings and using standard objects as communicative platforms, Patrick Martinez has produced a culturally engaging selection of work that facilitates a dialogue with the hip-hop boom of the 1990’s, and that looks absolutely knock-out.
