Emily May’s methodical attention to detail is peerless. Having graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University with a first class degree in Graphic Arts and Design, she now works in London producing playful and unpretentious illustration pieces. Emily cites her love of Disney’s whimsical characters and endearing animals as a prevalent inspiration for her love of character design and story telling. Though her charming illustrations depict quirky cutesy creatures and the stuff of classic fairytales, her designs are ecclectic, elegant and highly approachable.
Her informal style has been transferred into various mediums, featured on ceramics and clothing. She has worked with various clothing lines including the likes of Miranda Greenwood to create her range of menswear, reworking the traditional hawaiian print with images of wild British flowers and weeds, something definitely worth checking out.
Expect sphinx cats wrapped in winter garb, mariachi skeletons, eccentric portraits (look out for Queenie’s Jubilee piece and Wills and Kate sporting some mighty grins), fashion drawings, subverted fables and of course fairytales. Emily May has worked with a great bunch of clients such as Urban Outfitters, Warehouse, ASOS, and Urban Apothecary producing lovely, unassuming designs, plus some great personal commissions all of which can be found on her blog.
